COOLANA'S Mark and Anna Gubbins and family, Chatsworth, have been urging prospective buyers to 'Consider Coolana' for Angus bulls.
The catchprase seemed to work. Support for the line-up of 58 well-presented 18-month-old Angus bulls at their annual Victorian autumn bull sale at Chatsworth on March 7 was solid, despite a tough selling season.
Coolana recorded a total clearance. The 38 registered bidders, from Victorian and South Australian beef cattle regions, competed strongly in the middle-ground price ranges, and 70 per cent of the bulls sold from $3500 to $6000.
Only nine sold at the $3000 base price while seven received more than $6000.
This was different from the recent Coolana South Australian sale which had a strong top-end, a larger base price component, and little in the middle price range.
This sale had 11 new buyers among the 29 successful bidders.
If we combine numbers in the September spring bull sale and these two autumn sales, Coolana sold 154 Angus bulls to a top of $12,000 and $4880 average in the past six months.
Independent assessor Dick Whale said that of all the Victorian herds he has assessed, Coolana was the only one that had improved its Victorian autumn sale result compared with last year.
There was no extensive list of top-end buyers this year but one bull reached five figures - Coolana G662.
The impressive TeMania Africa A217 son had exceptional figures of up to +134 for 600-day weight and +9.0 for EMA to support its outstanding phenotype.
The winning bid of $10,000 was from Simon Rowe, Princess Royal Station, Burra who had bought last year's $12,000 top price bull.
Mr Rowe repeated last year's achievement as volume buyer, securing 10 bulls at a $5150 average, adding to the six he bought at Coolana's recent SA autumn sale at a $7417 average.
The top bulls that Princess Royal buys go to its bull breeding program at Burra for the Wertaloona and Wooltana outstations, while those priced less back-up station program needs.
From the $10,000 high, it was a drop down to $7500 for the next highest price, which was paid twice.
Regular top-end buyers Andrew and Rick Manifold, Boortkoi, Hexham secured two bulls at $7000 and one at $7500 for their commercial cow herd of more than 700 females.
New Coolana client, Dean Hurrell, Echunga, SA bought two of the best at $7500 and $6000, through Spence Dix & Co, Keith.
