THE feature breed was a cut above the rest in the Royal Adelaide Show pig ring this week, with a Landrace boar from a South Australian stud crowned supreme champion pig in show.
The 140 day old boar, bred by Michael, Margaret, Shaun Amy Blenkiron, Gumshire, Keyneton, was sashed junior boar, champion boar and best of breed before picking up the overall title.
Sired by Gumshire Promise H949 and out of Gumshire Princess J2089, Gumshire Promise M794 weighed in at 104.5kg with an average daily gain of 740 grams and a P2 fat depth of 10 millimetres.
Stud co-principal Michael said he was pleased with the stud's win on the day.
"His shape, composition, the way he moved himself and his overall stance was what made him a stand out I think," he said.
"You never know what the judges are looking for on the day, but he was it this time so we're pleased with that.
"We're extremely lucky to take home the best of breed and supreme champion pig in show against some really top class pigs throughout the shed.
"It's great for everyone to be back in the pig shed after two years and to have the show in full swing again, but to take home a win or two just tops it off."
The win also marks the fifth year in a row the Blenkiron family have taken the top honour at the Royal.
The judge on the day was Wesley Temmesl, Dubbo, NSW, who was judging for his first time in Adelaide after previously showing at the event.
"From the moment I started judging today he appealed to me," Mr Temmesl said of the champion pig.
"He was an excellent example of a Landrace and all around a solid boar.
"He carried himself well around the ring, had excellent teat placement and will breed well at his future home."
