For the second year in a row, canola harvests are expected to crack 5.5 million tonnes nationally, according to the Australian Oilseeds Federation.
There have been record hectares sown to the crop, although heavy rain has impacted on the potential yields.
The rain at seeding may have also impacted how germination and whether suitable paddocks could be accessed.
The increased returns for canola is thought to be some of the incentive behind the increased areas.
AOF executive officer Nick Goddard said in areas where crops were well established the wet conditions meant poor trafficability which has limited in-crop nitrogen applications, which would have a negative impact on end of season yields.
