In the look back to June, 1957, there was plenty happening in the livestock field.
A line of cattle made the eight-week trek along the Birdsville Track to sell at Gepps Cross, while bull sales had strong results.
One highlight from the month was an interstate sale of stud Merinos - touted as the largest of its kind in Australia - at Boonoke stud, Conargo, NSW.
The crowd was said to be 4000-strong, representing every state and New Zealand, with people standing 20 deep around the selling pens.
The popularity of the sale was described as being part of the "rush to Poll Merinos", with some 5435 ewes sold for an average of about 11 pounds.
SA buyers, who travelled there in droves by air, rail and road, bought back 369 ewes as well as four rams.
