A recent study of Australian saleyards has been looking into what values they bring to their local communities - beyond a place to buy and sell livestock.
The study has been going for a number of years, with surveys conducted of people from regional communities - including at Millicent, Mount Gambier and Naracoorte.
The results were released this week, with indications that the value far exceeds the simple economics at that site.
Instead, the researchers found there was a deep social importance for communities in this central hub.
Many respondents reported the venues formed places to meet with friends and form vital connections with others.
