STRATHALBYN
Yarding: 100
Steers to $2400
Heifers to $2060
A STRONG cattle yarding at the Strathalbyn May market is a credit to its quality vendors according to Elders Strathalbyn's Brett Peters, with more than 1000 head in the pens during Friday's sale.
Steers reached a top of $8.66 on the day, while heifers were not far behind on a top of $7.75/kg.
"To have a 1000 to 1100 head yarding in May is pretty impressive and if we keep doing that the popularity of the market will only grow," Mr Peters said.
"If we had that bit of rain two or three weeks ago the job would've been very strong, but it was still great where it was.
"There were some really good 200 to 280kg calves that sold really well and even those 330kg calves sold extremely well, well into $7/kg."
Nutrien Strathalbyn auctioneer Ben Dickenson echoed Mr Peters' sentiments.
"Yarding numbers were definitely up which shows how much traction Strathalbyn is gaining as a market," he said.
"That's why we're having sales when we might not normally, we're making it the best we can for our clients and getting good returns.
"The feedlot trade was represented by Thomas Foods, Princess Royal and a feedlotter from the West Coast, while our grass buyers were represented from local through to the South East and the Mid North which meant we had some strong competition throughout."
