AS the Mid North district waits for new-season lambs to drop in the coming months, Jamestown buyers had a reduced yarding to select from at its market this week but quality sheep were still in great demand and attracted the bids.
One-and-a-half year-old ewe popularity with buyers continued, with 240 North Ashrose-bloods from CP&SJ Heinjus, Brinkworth, making $266 to Elders Mildura.
The scanned and in-lamb ewes averaged 54.9 kilograms and had been running with White Suffolk rams.
A further 240, 1.5yo ewes from the same pen and vendor made $252 to Elders Strathalbyn.
Ewe lambs were few and far between, with 205 Lawral Park SAMM-blds from SJ,VF,&AV Briese, Yallunda Flat, making $202 to Nutrien Ag Solutions Jamestown. The lambs averaged 50.6kg.
Crossbred lambs performed extremely well, with C Simpson, Laura, making $182 for a small pen of 13 August 2021-drops that sold to Elders Jamestown.
Returns for crossbred lambs fell away slightly to $158 for 53 crossbred Gumview-bloods from GC,HW,JL&WG Crawford that sold to Spence Dix & Co. The June/July 2021-drops were March shorn.
Pekina Community Group, Pekina, made $138 for 45, September/October 2021-drop Suffolk/Merino crossbreds that sold to Elders Jamestown.
AR&JA Mannion, Orroroo, made $136 for 70 March-shorn White Suffolk/Merino lambs that went the same way.
Wethers made to $140 for 169 woolly April/May 2021-drop Hamilton Run-blds from BD&AK Williams, Carrieton. The wethers averaged 45.8kg and sold to Spence Dix & Co.
Returns for wethers dropped to $122 for 120 Line Gum Hill-blds from ND Chapman, Jamestown. The August/September 2021-drops were March shorn.
AJ&PA McBride - Braemar, Burra, offered a few drafts of wethers with the tops making $121 for 299 June/July 2021-drops. The Faraway Hill-blds April-shorns averaged 39.3kg and sold to an AuctionsPlus buyer.
The rest of the vendor's wethers made between $86-$88 for 1505 July/September 2021-drops that also sold to an AuctionsPlus buyer.
DA&SC Keatley, Appila, made $208 for 143 June/July 2018-drop Bradfield-bld SIL ewes that sold to Nutrien Ag Balaklava.
Longmire Farms, Spalding, made $152 for 100, July/August 2015-drops averaging 64.3kg. The Moorundie-blds sold to Spence Dix & Co.
Mixed-aged ewes attracted some attention and made to $186 for 44 June/July 2029/2020-drops. The Baderloo-blds had been running with Merino rams but scanned undetectable.
The next Jamestown sheep market will be held on May 19.
