But as a key deadline approaches in just two years, there are concerns about what might happen if some major targets are not met.

By June 2024, the MDBP is expected to have achieved water recovery targets of 450 gigalitres to be recovered through socio-economically neutral or positive efficiency measures, as well as 605GL of supply and constraint projects.
There are already admissions these targets will not be met, raising questions about what the next steps would be.
One option raised in a potential return to the water buybacks plan.
