Would you grow a summer crop?

SA cropping is more usually associated with winter but there is a growing number of farmers making use of summer rain for cover and feed crops.

Following a particularly wet November, and La Nina promising more rain to come, even more farmers have either sown a summer mix crop or considered it.

Tom Robinson, Hoyleton, who has been using summer crops as cover and feed for many years, says there are a multitude of benefits, including alleviating soil compaction, improving water infiltration and weed control.

Many of those who did sow summer mixes are now looking to the skies to fully reap the benefits but say there are good reasons to incorporate it into their system.
