LIGHTER steers exceeded $8.40 a kilogram at last week's Naracoorte combined agents monthly store cattle sale, with prices strong right across the 2000-head yarding.
Steers 200-280kg topped at $8.42/kg, averaging $6.87/kg, steers 280-330kg topped at $6.89/kg and averaged $6.65/kg, while those in the 330-400kg weight range topped at $6.46/kg, averaging $6.40/kg.
On the heavier side, steers 400-500kg topped at $5.99/kg, averaging $5.97/kg, while those over 500kg topped at $5.66/kg and averaged $5.62/kg.
Heifers reached a top of $7.26/kg, with the lighter heifer offering below 330kg averaging $6.47/kg.
Elders Naracoorte's Josh Reeves was "pretty happy with the sale, and said there was good demand right across the offering.
"Cattle under 300kg were extremely strong, sometimes up around $8/kg which was fantastic, the heavier end sold considerably well, and the mid range was extremely strong too," he said.
"Steers and heifers were good across the board, anything that people can make a dollar on at the moment is well sought after."
PPHS livestock agent Josh Manser said the sale had more feeder cattle than usual, which sold to regular buyers.
"There were some very well bred young black heifers between $6.50-7/kg, it was a very solid sale," he said.
Kalos Park, Bordertown, made the top cents per kilogram price of $8.42/kg or $1750 for seven May-June-drop steers weighing 209kg, and another seven 251kg April-May drop steers at $1850, or $6.73/kg, knocked down to TDC Lucindale.
They also sold 13 Angus-cross heifers, 225kg, at $1560, or 6.93/kg, as well as 10 heifers weighing 283kg which made $1840, or $6.50/kg.
Top price per head in the steer offering was $3000, or $5.66/kg, made by Lanark Estate, Lake Mundi, Vic, for 25 February/March-drop steers weighing 530kg.
Hanson Park, Bordertown, sold 20 Angus-cross steers, 279kg, at $7.12/kg, or $1986, with AR&ST Angel also making $7.12/kg, or $1958, for two Angus steers weighing 275kg.
Theron Farming, Lucindale, made $6.96/kg or $1601, for 23 steers weighing 259kg.

BH&LL Henriks, Senior, sold four Speckle Park steers, 280kg, at $1920, or $6.85/kg, and another 10 Angus steers, 309kg, at $2010, or $6.50/kg. The vendor also sold five Angus heifers, 223kg, at $1620 or $7.26/kg, two Speckle Park heifers, 280kg, at $1860, or $6.64/kg, and eight 295kg Angus heifers at $1650, or $6.27/kg.
Not far behind were FC&MP Harris, Lochaber, making $1890 or $6.82/kg for 19 Angus-cross steers weighing 277kg.
Jaylyn Pastoral, Strathalbyn, sold 19, 279kg Angus steers at $6.46/kg, or $2177, and another 19, weighing 378kg, at $6.04/kg, or $2283.
L&M Llewellyn & Co, Willalooka, sold 72 July/August 2020-drop steers, 371kg, at $6.30/kg, or $2337.
In the heifer offering, top price per head was $3250, or $6.50/kg, made by Killanoola Props, Bool Lagoon, for eight 500kg heifers.
Banning Partners, Wattle Range, made $2420, or $4.86/kg, for six 498kg black baldy heifers, with the vendor also selling six Angus-cross heifers, 480kg, at $2380, or $4.96/kg, and eight Speckle Park heifers, 448kg, at $2380, or $4.96/kg.
DF&GW Helyar, Murray Bridge, made $1620 or $7.26/kg for 14 Murray Grey heifers weighing 223kg, and sold another 11, 316kg, at $1900, or $6.01/kg.
Moonie Hills, Meningie, sold a line of 138 March/April-drop Angus heifers 54 which made $1890 with c/kg prices ranging from $6.51-$6.54/kg, and 84 which made $1900, with c/kg prices from $6.45-$6.88/kg.
