Varying weather puts pressure on headers

I have to say, when it comes to the Spanish siblings, La Nina is definitely my favourite, compared with El Nino. But that's not to say she doesn't come with trouble.

While La Nina is more commonly associated with the eastern states, there is clearly some flow-on effect in SA.

Rain during summer will help replenish soil moisture levels that have been depleted by a dry growing season, and the reduced fire risk is welcome. But the damage it brings at harvest can be massive.

From the potential of a great harvest this year, we've gone to potentially the worst downgrading from weather in more than a decade.

Fingers crossed, we get some clear days ahead so the headers can get stuck in, get the crop off, and then enjoy a few days rest, listening to rain on the roof. Especially given the good news wheat prices are in record territory, particularly out of SA ports.

The other news we've been waiting on is the results of the Australian Wool Innovation election. Despite a well-publicised campaign, it seems not many people were engaged in the lead-up, with low voting turnout - which is a shame.

But hopefully, with a decision made on that and the levy results, the newly-formed board will be back to business, advocating for Australian sheep and fleece.
