ALAN Lintern's Seymour Vale Suffolk stud increased the top-price made last year at the Mount Pleasant saleyards yesterday, with 24 offered, five sold to a $1100 average and a top of $2000.
Held prior to the Mount Pleasant market, attendees numbers were growing as bidding reached $2000, with the top price ram bought by Duane Wilson, Balaklava.
The lot two ram weighed 141 kilograms, with figures of 0.44 for birthweight, a 7.58 weaning weight, 11.52 post weaning weight, -0.99 PFAT, 0.43 PEMD and 123.23 on the terminal carcase production index.
It had a Lamb Eating Quality index of 116.98 and a Trade $ index of 106.07.
Mr Wilson was a returning buyer where he bought one ram in last years sale and liked what was produced.
"I liked the overall size and power of the ram I bought," he said.
"There were plenty more in the line-up that I would have bought as the rams presented well.
"I came back to buy a ram to go over the daughters of the sire I purchased last year."
Mr Lintern said the Suffolk ram sale was tough but Mr Wilson got the ram he wanted within the budget he had.
"The top-price Suffolk ram was the supreme champion at the Tanunda show and was a structurally correct ram."
Mr Lintern said it was his first year offering Suffolk stud ewes and they sold really well.
"I was more than happy with the ewe sale and will do that again," he said.
"They all went to a breeder looking to start a stud so I am hopeful to see some genetics come back through on our own progeny.
Nutrien stud stock's Gordon Wood said it was a tough sale and missed opportunity.
"There were some really well-grown out Suffolk rams that have LambPlan data backing them up and was a missed opportunity for commercial producers to have got onto some fairly cheap rams," he said.
"There was plenty of growth and weight for age in the line-up, up to 141kg for only 14-month old rams."
The sale was conducted by Nutrien Fawcett Livestock, with Nutrien stud stock's Gordon Wood the auctioneer.
