Sheep consultant Jason Trompf says if Merinos are to remain the cornerstone of Australia's sheep flock, more stud and commercial breeders needed to use Sheep Genetics and have a greater focus on what is making money on commercial farms.
Speaking at a PIRSA livestock forum in Naracoorte recently, Dr Trompf challenged SA commercial Merino breeders to make sure their ram supplier is providing them with Australian Sheep Breeding Values or consider changing bloodlines.
He said the "modern Merino" had a lot to offer with wool, lamb, mutton and surplus sheep sales but he said many stud and commercial breeders needed to get better at breeding to capitalise on the various market signals.
