SHEEP producers got to have a look at some potential breeding lines as part of a travelling on-property field day near Eudunda on Friday.
Organised by Paul Kilby, TDC Livestock, the day involved looking at core breeding flocks of specific bloodlines.
Mr Kilby said the region had a lot of core flocks of Merino ewes and he thought there would be some interest in showcasing the different bloodlines.
He spoke to several studs about being included, with five different bloodlines shown during the day: East Bungaree, Bunyara, Narcoota, Old Ashrose and Springvale North.
Each commercial breeder was able to speak about their management and goals for the flock, then the stud principals also had the chance to talk on their objectives and key attributes.
The sheep shown were in commercial flocks, with mobs of different ages shown.
Mr Kilby said it was a good chance to have a look at the breeding objectives available from different seed stock.
"Every stud produces a different article and by showing a core flock, it's a good representation of that bloodline," he said.
"Then if people are thinking about something different, they can see what's out there.
"Instead of just looking at the ram, you can looking at a breeding flock and see how they perform."
He said there was good interest in the inaugural event, and he hopes it can continue in future years, with the potential to include more studs in the showcase.
"People are passionate about Merino breeding throughout SA," he said.
"And people also like learning from other people, so they come along for that reason too."
Mr Kilby said with ram sale season approaching, this was a good time for people to start thinking about their breeding goals.
