HELPING students discover and explore the ever-increasing pathways to becoming involved in the agricultural industry is the inspiration behind a new Year 12 Award for Outstanding Achievement in Agriculture.
The Agricultural Teachers Association of SA have teamed up with SA machinery dealers Ramsey Bros to offer the award, with the four winners receiving a $250 cash prize and the opportunity to complete a week's work experience at a Ramsey Bros dealership.
Schools will be able to nominate two student for the annual awards.
Ramsey Bros sales manager Tim Glover said from his company's perspective, the awards would show students the wide range of career options available within the agricultural industry.
"Traditionally, agricultural science study has leaned towards getting involved in things like livestock production, agronomy or soil science," he said.
"But in our business for example, the machinery we're dealing with on a daily basis is some of the most hi-tech machinery in the world.
"There are many career pathways even within a machinery dealership and the precision ag side of the business.
"It's opening up their eyes that there are many areas within the ag industry that have a pivotal role and there are alternative pathways to become involved in the ag industry, not just the traditonal ones mentioned."
To be eligible for the award, students must show they have studied a SACE Stage Two agricultural subject at an exceptional level, or they have contributed significantly to their school and/or community's agricultural program.
Nominations for 2021 are open and entries close on September 24. Applications will be managed through ATASA and they can e contacted at https://atasa.tidyhq.com/public/contact_us
