HOGGET competitions were in full-swing across the state, particularly in the West Coast communities of Nunjikompita, Brimpton Lake and Streaky Bay, but that was not all that was going on in July 1963.
The Gepps Cross abattoir marked 50 years of operation, baconers were also judged, and the Rural Youth gained some insight into the Merino industry.
A number of new sites opened up, such as the SA Farmers' Union Murray Bridge office and wool store in Port Adelaide, and another in Millicent for Bennett & Fishers, even as Elders, Goldsborough & Mort stalwarts stepped down, bringing together industry representatives.
It was also the end of an era as the Paddle Steamer Marion took its final journey down the River Murray.
