VIC commercial cattle breeders Kym and Leonie Sambell attended Yerwal Estate's Angus sale at Lucindale for the first time on Monday and ended up paying the top price of $15,000 - a new on-property record for the Burow family.
Sired by Sprys-W Supreme M505 and out of Yerwal J81, Yerwal Supreme Q106 was a June 2019-drop bull weighing 794 kilograms with figures of +6.3 for eye muscle area, +4.5 birthweight, +108 600-day weight, +2.2 scrotal size and +14 for milk.
The Sambells admired the bull's "length and style, size - a very smooth bull", which will be run with Angus cows back at their Benayeo property.
Yerwal Estate stud principal Regan Burow was rapt with the new on-property record price, predicting it would be the sale's top bull.
"It had a good balance of growth and muscle, softness and style, and structural correctness - just a really good bull," he said.
"It nearly ended up in the stud, so I am happy to see the herd it will be going into."
Overall, Yerwal Estate sold 22 Angus bulls from the 36 offered, averaging $6409 - a $1167 increase on the 2020 sale average.
Mr Burow said while the clearance rate was down, they were really pleased to set new benchmarks for the stud.
"We sold all of the passed in lots straight after the sale, so it has been a good day," he said.
"We had one or two struggle to get over the border, but we also had a few new clients operating from Vic, so that was good to see."
Mr Burow said they didn't have as many on offer this year, as they sold some weaner bulls back in October to meet demand.
The sale's second-highest price-tag of $14,000 went to Yerwal Supreme Q150, bought by long-time clients SA&GE Smith, Lucindale.
This October 2019-drop bull, sired by Sprys-W Supreme M505 and out of Yerwal Dream J52, weighed 732kg, with figures of +6.6EMA, +3.8BWT, +104 for 600-day weight, +2 scrotal size and +15 for milk.

Mr Burow said if it was older, it may have pipped the top price bull.
"It really was standout," he said. "When you look at its data, its weight for age is really quite exceptional."
Lot 1 bull Yerwal Supreme Q15, another son of Sprys-W Supreme M505, achieved the sale's third-highest price of $8000, sold to return client Sunray Pastoral, Millicent, while Netherley Trading, Millicent, also paid $8000 for their sole purchase of Yerwal Supreme Q48.
Radford Pastoral, Penola, was again the sale's volume buyer, taking home seven bulls to $6000, averaging $5143, while new client Glare Coffe, Hawkesdale, Vic, bought three bulls to $5000, averaging $4667.
Nutrien Livestock conducted the sale, with stud stock's Richard Miller as the auctioneer.
