Sales of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and side-by-sides (SSVs) rocketed up in 2020.

Their sales are combined in a category called off-high vehicles (OHVs) in statistics compiled by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), the peak body for the automotive industry in Australia.

OHVs enjoyed strong sales growth in 2020, climbing by 38.8 per cent to 24,856 vehicles compared with 17,906 the previous year.

The FCAI doesn't provide the breakdown between ATV and SSV sales.

Total sales of motorcycles and OHVs for 2020 were 108,926 units, an increase of 22.1pc on 2019.

Off-road motorcycles also recorded strong growth, with 44,697 vehicles sold during the year, up 30.3pc on 2019.

Road bikes sales rose by 9.2pc to 34,912 units.

Scooters were the only segment of the 2020 motorcycle and OHV full year sales to record a decline.

A total of 4461 units were sold, 553 fewer than the previous year.

Chief executive of the FCAI Tony Weber said the lift in sales was welcome news for the industry.

"Given the difficult market conditions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, it is reassuring to see segments of the market continuing to perform well," he said.

"The rise in popularity of personal transport in this segment demonstrates that OHVs, off-road motorcycles and road bikes were a preferred option for many recreational and commuting activities during the year."
