THE Strathalbyn abattoir has closed, with management of Strath Pastoral issuing a statement that the company had ceased all trading as of 5pm Wednesday.
The family owned and operated business said it was a devastating time for all concerned, but the business was no longer viable.
"For many, many years this has been a thriving local business and that's why this decision is such a heartbreaking one," Strath Pastoral director Darren Lamp said.
"We have done all we could to keep the business profitable but in the current economic downturn, it is simply no longer viable and it would be irresponsible to continue to operate."
The announcement follows the recent sale of the company's land holding on the outskirts of Strathalbyn and will force the closure of the abattoir, which employs three full-time staff and 11 casual workers.
All will receive their full entitlements and all suppliers will be paid with no monies owing.
Management has advised that it is working closely with both the Department of Primary Industries and Regions and interested parties in a bid to secure the future of the meatworks.
