MOUNT PLEASANT
Yarding: 73 cattle, 1375 sheep and lambs
Steers to $2100
Lambs to $190
Cattle prices remained strong at Mount Pleasant on Thursday last week, selling to $2100, with a good buying gallery present despite the small yarding.
Nutrien Fawcett Livestock's Colin Fawcett said processors, feedlotters, and local graziers and butchers were all out in force in the cattle ring.
"There is a shortage of cattle out there, especially after two or three years of droughts and many stock lost in the fires, but there was a good buying gallery for what we had on offer," he said.
"There has been a bit of easing in the cattle job in the past week or so, but it wasn't all that evident on Thursday."
Topping the market were two Murray Grey steers from KH Rattei, making $2100, with the same vendor selling another two at $2000.
Fellow Springton vendor B Ames sold one Angus steer at $1920, while TD Kassebaum, Flaxman Valley, wasn't far behind, making $1820 for three Murray Grey steers.
In the heifer section, D&M&C Schultz, Cambrai, sold two Murray Greys at $1780, with AE&CM Tucker, Birdwood, selling a Murray Grey at $1720.
RE Waechter, Angaston, sold a cow with a calf at-foot for $1900, while $1860 was made for two Poll Hereford cows from MacLachlan Props, Pewsey Vale.
In the sheep yarding, which was much bigger, Mr Fawcett said there was a "reasonable run" of fresh lambs, which were slightly lighter than previous markets, but still sold to good competition.
Top price in the lamb offering was made by Hearnden Farms, Keyneton, selling 22 at $190, and another 22 at $182.
Local vendor Jason Stewart, Mount Pleasant, sold ten lambs at $180.
GJ Wait, Blewitt Springs, sold 41 at $172, a price also made by LP&C Deans, Tanunda.
Hoggets topped at $160, for three from A Edwards, Penrice, while AJ Quast sold one at $158.
AK Rosenzweig, Sedan, sold two wethers at $184, just ahead of CM&R Schultz, Cambrai, who had three make $182.
A top price of $162 was made for ewes, with that price made by six from Foulis Trading Trust, Springton, and ten from Belmont Proprietors, also of Springton.
RS&SM Cox, Palmer, sold 15 ewes at $160, a price also made by two from Trevor Materne, Greenoch.
The final Mount Pleasant market of the year will be held on Thursday December 10.
