YOUNG Murray Grey and Angus stud breeder Jake Phillips says online judging competitions such as Stock Journal's Steer Showdown are a great way for the "show to go on" in these COVID-19 times.
But it is important the video footage enables the judge and viewers to see the best assets of the animal from the front, side profile and rear, as well as when it is walking.
Mr Phillips says a cool, calm atmosphere is needed to get the best video possible and entrants should carefully consider the background before they start filming to ensure the focus is on the animal not other items in the background.
Stock Journal's Steer Showdown is open to all steers that are being entered in the Royal Adelaide Show's 2020 beef carcase competition.
Video reminders
- Keep it simple
- Check the background of your shot
- Keep the steer relaxed and use its natural stance and gait
- Video the steer from the rear, side and front
- Video the steer walking, either led or unled
Technical reminders
- Shoot the video horizontal (turn the phone on its side)
- Keep the camera steady-use a tripod or sit the camera on a fence or step ladder or other stationary object
- Shoot three minutes of video footage and we will edit it for you
There is some great prize money up for grabs and a chance to promote your stud or school's ag program.
The three minutes of video footage and side on profile photo of each entry need to be submitted by Friday, August 7 with the judging to be live streamed on Stock Journal's website in late August.
