THIS weekend, 90 tonnes of donated hay is bound for Yunta, thanks to a recent partnership between Rotary and Helping SA Farmers.
Five SA Rotary clubs - St Peters, Mawson Lakes, Port Pirie, Campbelltown and Burnside - donated $5000 each to pay for the hay, as part of its drought relief program, while Gawler River hay producer Greg Damiani also donated four rolls and a prime mover.
All up, eight prime movers and trailers were donated by eight local transport and haulage companies to get the 240 rolls of oaten and wheaten hay to the North East pastoral region.
A number of other donated items, such as fuel cards, food hampers, water, pet food and knitted gifts, will also make the trek.
Helping SA Farmers coordinator Lisa Vassallo said the run came about after she contacted Rotary district governor Bob Cooper about their drought relief grants.
"Within six weeks, we had this hay bought and ready for delivery," she said.
The hay will be shared across 15 pastoral properties.
"Some SA farmers are facing one of the worst droughts in history," she said.
"Many are destocking and prematurely cutting crops, while others face water and feed shortages.
"Giving hope to our struggling farming families is our priority."
