Construction on Free Eyre's Port Spencer grain port could begin as early as this month, despite the proposal recently attracting opposition from locals in the Tumby Bay area.
A petition against the proposal has attracted more than 2300 signatures, while local progress associations have also expressed their opposition. These organisations instead favour proposals for a multi-commodity port at Cape Hardy, just 10 kilometres away from the Port Spencer site.
But, Free Eyre chairman John Crosby said subsidiary company Peninsula Ports was only waiting on approvals from state government departments and the sign-off by Transport and Infrastructure Minister Stephan Knoll before construction would start at the 140-hectare Sheep Hill site.
"The recent backlash will not have any influence on our planning process and I hope it won't have any impact on the ministerial process," Mr Crosby said.
