BOTH Dairy Connect and a prominent Victorian businessman have called for the introduction of a levy on fresh milk to support struggling dairyfarmers.
Meanwhile, producer advocacy group Dairy Connect says a levy of some form needs to be at the forefront of consideration by government and dairy industry players given the strong support of supermarket customers for the continuation of a vibrant Australian dairy industry.
But Agriculture Minister David Littleproud believes a voluntary levy is the best option to support dairyfarmers, as it allowed the market to respond, with consumers making purchasing decisions that benefit farmers.
"It is only fair that retailers play their part in giving farmers a leg up during this difficult time. This is a way of making amends for damage to the industry during the years of $1 milk prices," he said.
