GRANITE Ridge stud at Avenue Range left its mark on the Elders 'Show Must Go On' Sale - the online auction held last Friday in place of the RAS Angus sale usually held at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.
The SA stud bought the $19,000 highest price female from KO stud, Kangaloon, NSW, with the 11-month-old heifer the first of the renowned Champagne cow family the stud has offered under Tim Lord's management.
Granite Ridge stud principal Scott Finlay said the female side of the pedigree of lot 31, KO Champagne Q68 was a "big drawcard" along with the animal's impressive phenotype which he said matched the Breedplan figures.
"She was the one we wanted so we made sure we got her," he said.
"She had high EMA (eye muscle area) and IMF (intramuscular fat), these are the traits we believe will be really desirable into the future."
Champagne Q68 - which was sired by Pathfinder General K7 - will be used as a embryo transfer donor by Granite Ridge.
Elders auctioneer Lincoln McKinlay called the bids for the 'Show Must Go On' sale live from the Elders Goulburn office with the bidding action coming from across the country from 190 people logged onto AuctionsPlus.
Four of 16 bulls sold to $20,000 averaging $8125, while eight of 12 females averaged $11,688.
The $20,000 top price bull was Circle 8 The Project Pineapple P124 offered by Cooper Cattle Trust, Marulan, NSW.
It sold to David and Vivienne Young of Londavra Angus, St Marys, Tas, who run 300 breeders of which about 140 are stud registered cows.
Described as having a "bullet proof pedigree", the sale topper was sired by VAR Discovery 2240 and out of Circle 8 9180 Rosebud M141.
"We haven't seen the bull but from the video we liked its growth for age, thickness, and how structurally correct it was," Mr Young said.
KO Rosebud P141, also offered by KO Angus, was the second highest price heifer making $16,000 to Robrick Lodge, Castlereagh, NSW.
The joined heifer was a daughter of Pathfinder Genesis G357 and out of the renowned Rosebud cow family.
Four embryo packages sold to a $1400 high per embryo and averaged $1200.
The Thompson family from Venturon Livestock, Boyup Brook, WA, secured the top-priced embryos that were a KO Dream G68 and GB Fireball 672 cross.
Elders NSW stud stock manager Paul Jameson said the sale was "tough" for commercial bulls but a number of the passed in lots still attracted some bids without meeting vendor reserves.
" There was a lot of interest, especially with the stud type sires and throughout the females," he said.
"Away from the results, the mechanics of the system worked well.
"The online audio and video streaming still bought the ability for the auctioneer to have influence over buyers watching or listening, and it created an atmosphere to the sale.
"We have learnt a couple of things, such as having a loop of the bull parading in the background, and going forward we can adapt to make it better for sales in the future."
