A BULL named Premier was the top of the Roseleigh Angus class on Tuesday morning, demanding the Pinnaroo stud's sale top price of $14,000 at the Mandayen Selling Complex, Sherwood.
In a highly successful sale, 30 of the 33 sale bulls were sold in the ring to a healthy average of $6450.
The average was significantly contributed to by four bulls cracking the $10,000 mark including Roseleigh Premier P64, which was snapped up by Nathan Nutt, NA Nutt & JA Simpson.
The 992 kilogram bull ranked in the top 5 per cent of estimated breeding values for 200-day growth and 400-day weight, while landing in the top 1pc for 600-day weight.
The June 2018-drop bull was sired by Mandayen Complement L464 and out of Roseleigh Effie E99
Mr Nutt runs a commercial cattle herd, predominantly Angus, west of Keith and said the bull's visual appeal stood out, contributed to by a good topline and rump.
In total, Mr Nutt secured three bulls to an average of $8000.
The sale's $6450 average was up $686 on last year and stud co-principal Mat Cowley was very pleased with the result.
"We're very happy with how the sale went," he said.
"Our average was up and we had a good clearance so we can't complain."
Volume buyers on the day included Tyeka Partners, Meningie, which bought four bulls to $7000, averaging $5625.
Longridge Pastoral, Yankalilla, bought three bulls to $7000, averaging $5833, while Dillbong Pastoral Company, Tara, Qld, took three bulls to $11,500, averaging $9500.
The $11,500 purchase was also a Mandayen Complement son and out of Roseleigh M45.
Nutrien Ag Solutions auctioneer Richard Miller said the sale was a fantastic result for the Cowley family and was highly complementary of the stud's breeding program.
"They are, in my opinion, the highest performing growth bulls in the Angus week that we sell," he said.
"It's not a large number of bulls, but it's a quality even line of bulls right the way through."
Mr Miller described the bulls as having "a power of meat".
"They've all got positive fat so they've got doing ability to go with it," he said.
"It was a strong buying crowd full of loyal repeat buyers, which is a testament to the breeding program of the Cowleys."
Nutrien conducted the sale, with Mr Miller performing auctioneer duties.
