Wethers reach $244 at Mt Pleasant

Landmark Fawcett Mount Pleasant principal Colin Fawcett said the sheep market was met with "very good demand", which helped push the prices up.

"There's a bit of a mutton shortage - everyone is looking for them, but they're not there," he said.

"You can definitely see the step up in competition."

The top wether price was made by IM&RJ Eats, Tooperang, with one making $244, while another from R&J Sweetman, Red Creek, sold at $236. A line of four from J Ronan, Woodside, made $230.

KW Green, Penfield, sold the top price ewes, with seven knocked down at $244, and seven from Hearnden Farm, Keyneton, made the second top price of $236.

The top lamb price was achieved by RM&TE Hein, Burdett, who sold 27 at $228, with 11 crossbred lambs from MJ Dunn, Brinkley, making $224.

Hoggets topped at $190 for four from H Persic, Angaston, with another four from Menglers Hill Vineyard, also of Angaston, making the same price.

Three rams from AS&JD Cameron, Angaston, made $180, a price also made by one from Belmont Proprietors, Springton, while two sheep from Paul Menzel were knocked down at $200.

In the cattle ring, Mr Fawcett said both restockers and processors were active.

"Good types of cattle were very much sought-after, and even stores sold very well, they're just getting very hard to find," he said.

A Murray Grey cow from PA&FT Frahn, Mannum, made the equal top price of $1780, with that price also being made for a Poll Hereford from Poonawatta Nominees, Angaston, and a Black Baldy from Mountside Nominees, Charleston.

Steers topped at $1600, for a Black Baldy from M Vinersmith, who also sold an Angus steer at $1560. A Red Angus from BM Pitman, Birdwood, also made $1560.

In the heifer section, the top price was achieved by PG Keatley & TM Grech, Roseworthy, who sold a Black Baldy knocked down at $1420, with the same vendor selling a Poll Hereford at the same price.

Mr Fawcett said buying support came mainly from Thomas Foods International, Princess Royal, Frew Meats, Midfield, and Australian Lamb Company, while restockers came from the Mid North, Mallee, and also local areas.
