LIVESTOCK producers are set to benefit from the creation of at least ten regional Producer Technology Groups, which will help producers upskill and implement the latest in agricultural technology.
The Producer Technology Groups are part of the state government's $7.5 million commitment to growing the red meat and wool sector.
Expressions of interest are now being sought from producers wanting to be involved in the program.
Acting Primary Industries and Regional Development Minister Dan van Holst Pellekaan said the Red Meat and Wool Growth program would be pivotal in improving agriculture in SA.
"The Red Meat and Wool Growth program helps develop the capacity of producers and lays a solid foundation for rebuilding the state's herd and flock post drought and bushfire," he said.
"Key focuses include enhancing business resilience, improving cattle and sheep quality and productivity, improving on-farm decision making and enhancing biosecurity.
"Our red meat and wool sectors typically generate $2.4 billion each year in production and processing revenue and $1.5 billion in exports, as well as supporting 30,000 jobs.
"These industries have the potential to develop further to grow our economy and boost regional employment.
"A major component of the Red Meat and Wool Growth Program is to upskill livestock producers in the use of readily available technology, particularly individual animal electronic identification systems and associated data to improve on-farm decision making.
"The Producer Technology Groups will provide producers the opportunity to support each other in the exploration, implementation and practical application of technology, biosecurity and business planning.
"They will be given the tools to improve the productivity, efficiency and profitability in their businesses. We are seeking interest from any interested producers or established groups of producers who are interested in participating in this initiative.
"At least ten livestock technology groups will be established across the state over the life of the program. Each group will be facilitated and be able to draw on the support of technical experts."
Expressions of interest in the Red Meat and Wool Growth Program Producer Technology Groups are open until 5pm Friday, March 13.
