DNA testing and genomic selection tools are not often thought about in the context of drought management, but they can assist producers position their herds for a faster and more productive recovery when the rains return.
Neogen Australasia sales and marketing manager Sarah Buttsworth said the tools were a cost-effective option for livestock breeders as they grapple with which animals to keep and which to cull as they work to protect years of breeding integrity and high-quality genetics.
"DNA testing offers producers the opportunity to bring clear, objective thinking to these decisions so that they can select their very best animals for retention and from which to rebuild their herd when the drought breaks," Ms Buttsworth said.
Neogen staff will be available to discuss the company's range of genomic selection tools, including its most recent release, the Igenity Beef test, which is designed specifically to help crossbred commercial cattle breeders to rank the genetic merit of individual animals.
