NARACOORTE
Yarding: 1955
PTIC Heifers to $2300
PTIC Cows to $2120
Heifers w CAF to $2020
LOCAL producers buying replacement PTIC heifers underpinned a solid female sale at Naracoorte on Thursday.
The vast majority of the 1955-head yarding were PTIC females, with a small selection of cows with calves at foot.
The tops of the PTIC heifers sold to $2300, with PTIC cows making $2120 and heifers with calves at foot topping at $2020.
Elders Naracoorte livestock manager Tom Dennis said returns were in line with pre-sale expectations.
"Cattle showing really good weight for age and those who are annual presenters of stock for the sale sold well," he said.
"There was cheaper sales on the day - if cattle were showing a lack of weight or preparation, results suffered a bit."
"Anything that was well-bred and well-presented sold okay."
Mr Dennis described the cattle job as a buyers market this year, with limited regions for cattle to go into.
"We're at an in-between time in the season where there's a line half an hour south of Naracoorte that's got feed," he said.
"We're trying to put every animal for sale either in a feedlot or in that area."
There was a good cross section of buyers present, according to Mr Dennis.
"There was a combination of people that buy replacement PTIC heifers from this sale each year and those that had a poor preg-test result and needed some extra females," he said.
"A few traders were there to buy them, calve them down and resell them - it was a good cross section of buyers, with the trade even buying a few pens towards the end which is unusual for a female sale, but a sign of the times with NSW in a bad way and local fires having an impact on people's mindsets around growth and acquiring new stock."
Topping the market was Nampara Pastoral Company, Penola, which sold 10 rising two-year-old PTIC EU Angus heifers, joined to Nampara Angus bulls, for $2300 to Elders Casterton.
