THE latest outcomes from grains research and development will be delivered to graingrowers at a GRDC forum at the Balaklava Town Hall on Thursday, February 13.
GRDC Southern Grower Relations Manager Randall Wilksch says the update will present information, advice and recommendations for informing growers' tactical decision-making for improved profitability.
"Experts from across Australia will be presenting at the Balaklava Grains Research Update, providing new insights and advice from GRDC investments in research and development relevant to the region's growers," he said.
"This information will help to inform growers' decision making ahead of the 2020 cropping season and into the future."
Among the guest speakers will be Peter Newman from the Australian Herbicide Resistance Initiative and Planfarm in WA, who will demonstrate a tool that helps determine the cost of harvest weed seed control for individual growers.
Mr Newman will explain how the tool uses crop yields, sowing area, cost of various HWSC tactics, and efficacy on locally important weed species to determine the best HWSC option for a given situation.
The 'hows and whys' of deep ripping sandy soils will be delved into by Brian Dzoma from SARDI, who will advise on how to achieve the best results from deep ripping and the expected magnitude of improvement in crop performance.
Gerard McMullen from the National Working Party on Grain Protection will discuss the use of chemicals and their residues and the implications for growers and advisers in terms of key export market requirements.
In-paddock tools to detect and quantify frost damage in wheat to inform hay cutting decisions will be outlined by Glenn Fitzgerald and Audrey Delahunty from Agriculture Vic.
Chris Preston from the University of Adelaide will provide an update on resistance data for pre-emergent herbicides and best use of new chemistries in the context of crop safety plant-back, where they fit in the rotation, soil, rainfall and seasonal impacts.
The update will run from 9am to 1pm, with catering provided.
