FARMERS with a surplus of creosote-treated pine posts are being urged to donate them to BlazeAid, as the bushfire relief and rebuild organisation prepare to replace fences damaged during the Ravine fire on Kangaroo Island.
BlazeAid KI coordinator Greg Stevens said a camp was set up at Parndana, but volunteers were waiting on conditions to be safe before travelling to the island.
"We're hoping to set a start date within the next few days but we can't be sure because we've been having constant flare ups of fire that threaten roads, so we can't bring caravans and people in while the situation's like that," he said.
Mr Stevens said 55 landholders on KI had applied for help from BlazeAid to date, with hundreds of people from "all parts of the world" expressing their interest in volunteering.
He said creosote-treated pine posts of any size would be appreciated, with their shortage the only thing that would hold up the KI re-fencing effort.
"We've got wire, labour and a willingness to do it but we don't have the posts to put in," Mr Stevens said.
While BlazeAid is hopeful of confirming a start date for their Parndana camp shortly, Mr Stevens said experienced BlazeAid members had started assisting the defence force with clean-up efforts.
"We've got about 12 kilometres of fence down so far," he said. "We'll take down damaged fences for starters and when people have got fencing materials ready to go we'll start putting up fences."
