THE Renmark Irrigation Trust farewells one of its own tonight, as presiding member Peter Duggin steps down from the role.
He leaves the organisation in good shape, having led the RIT to become the first irrigation scheme in the world to be awarded gold level certification for sustainability practices.
Mr Duggin also instigated the first program of it's kind in Australia to partner with the Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder to return water to parts of the environment that are degraded.
Former chair of the National Water Commission, Karlene Maywald, said Mr Duggin would be missed.
"He was a great leader," she said.
Mr Duggin has promoted diversity and inclusion in the 125-year-old institution, by encouraging local grower Cate Strachan to stretch her leadership skills and step up as deputy chair of the RIT.
Rosalie Auricht is also the new general manager.
Tonight, the RIT will honour Mr Duggin with a special presentation and dinner at Twenty Third Street Distillery in Renmark.
