Good quality cattle sell well at Mount Pleasant

Landmark Fawcett Mount Pleasant principal Colin Fawcett said it was a "strong" market, with "good numbers and good prices".

"The quality of cattle was very good again, and it was surprising how fresh some of the lambs were," he said.

The yarding was up from 607 sheep and 136 cattle at the previous Mount Pleasant market and Mr Fawcett said cows with calves-at-foot were in particularly strong demand.

"There were a number of people looking for them and they sold pretty well," he said.

Six Angus cows with CAF from B Ames, Springton, made the top price of $1820, while M Heitman, Mount Pleasant sold 10 for the same price, and another three at $1800.

Steers topped at $1680, for two Murray Greys from M&S Saunders.

AL&S Dahlenberg, Rosedale, sold the second top price steer - a Murray Grey which made $1580 - as well as two heifers of the same breed, which made $1480 and topped the heifer section.

The top cow price was achieved by Rachel Barnett, Oakbank, who sold a Poll Hereford for $1760, while FK&A Dorr, Birdwood, and Brown Farming Enterprises, Keyneton, offered one Angus cow each, with both making $1700.

In the sheep yarding, R Randall, Angaston, sold the top price lambs, with nine making $178, and also sold six hoggets which made the top price of $156.

The same vendor also sold 12 ewes for $144 and 11 for $134, which were the second and third top price ewes.

Hearnden Farm, Keyneton, sold 33 lambs which were knocked down for $174, and 29 from VK&MA Mueller, Birdwood, made $170.

Wethers topped at $135, for 10 from WS&CB Whittall, Nairne, while $134 was made for three offered by L&M Schwarz, Monarto South.

LP&C Deans, Tanunda, topped the ewe section, making $145 for 46, and V Cook, Mount Pleasant, sold the top price ram, which was knocked down for $120.

The Mount Pleasant off-shears market will be held this Wednesday, and the next regular market will be held on November 28.
