NEARLY two-thirds of the Kimba region are willing to support the construction of a radioactive waste management facility locally, according to the results of an official vote.
The Australian Electoral Commission declared the results from the ballot facilitated by the District Council of Kimba.
The mail ballot asking residents if they support a proposed facility being located in the Kimba area closed November 7, in reference to two suggested local sites.
Of those 824 people eligible to vote, about 90 per cent took part in the ballot, with 61.58pc voting in support and 38.42pc voting against.

Kimba mayor Dean Johnson thanked the community for its engagement and participation in the ballot.
"The results will now be passed to the Department of Industry Innovation and Science and (Resources) Minister (Matt) Canavan for consideration," he said.
"Declaration of a final site is anticipated to be made early in the new year."
Ballot papers for a similar vote in the Hawker region are expected to be shared from next week to gauge local support or dissent.
