THE first lot in the 16th annual Springwaters Poll Dorset ram sale sparked interest amoung buyers, but it was a Victorian stud that made the final bold bid to secure the $11,000 sale-topper today.
Described as "a genuine stud sire", Springwaters 70 was the top-priced ram that was purchased by Greg Robinson of Ferndale Poll Dorsets on behalf of Rob McCartney of Yentrac Poll Dorset stud at Tatura, Vic.
The April 2018-drop, 164 kilogram ram was sired by Springwaters "Pocock" 66-16, a lead sire within the Rowley family's stud who's first sons were on offer during the sale, and measured 9mm in the fat depth with an eye muscle area of 46.96 squared centimetres and an index of 1660.
Springwaters co-principal Dane Rowley said the high-selling ram was always a standout since the day he was born.
"We used him within our stud as a five-month-old lamb, and we have some excellent rams on the ground," Mr Rowley said.
"He is a worthy stud ram ... it was great for him to go to a stud."
In the breakdown 12 stud rams were sold to average $5875 while 170 flock rams averaged $1717.
Mr Rowley said to clear all the rams was pretty amazing.
"We are thrilled with how the stud ram sold and as the sale progressed, all budgets were cated for," he said.
"There was roughly 25 go for $1000. Clients cancome with any budget and get a ram that suits them."
The sale was conducted by Elders and Delta Livestock and Property.
