"The sheep market is very strong, the wool market is good," he said.

"The only thing holding it all back is the lack of feed in so many areas, even the next month in the mid-SE will determine where it is at.

"Last year people were paying $300-plus for the very top sheep, but it will take a pretty good sheep to make $300 this year."

Mr Lovelock - an agent with Spence Dix & Co - says where there is potential upside from last year is wether lambs, especially if they are suitable for trade buyers.

One of his clients the Daniel family, Senior Park, Senior, are maintaining a nearly 40-year tradition of selling on-farm.

On October 16 - following the Bordertown offshears sale - ,they will offer 650 1.5 year old ewes, 850 5.5 year old ewes as well as the complete drop, 1800 five-month-old wether lambs.

"Considering the late start, they are well-conditioned, and the sheep are always well regarded," Mr Lovelock said.

Each of these age groups will be sold in unrestricted runs as long as there is at least 100 head remaining for the final knock.

Senior Park's flock is based on Collinsville blood with more recent infusions from Kamora Park, Rices Creek and Ridgway Advance.

Over the years they have spent a considerable amount of money on top quality genetics, including $15,000 for two rams this season, and been rewarded by buyers.

Last year Senior Park's ewes topped at $260.

"We get a lot of repeat interest and I have even had enquiry from the neighbour of one of last year's wether lamb buyers," Mr Lovelock said.

Owner Nathan Daniel says their aim is to breed "large-framed, easy care sheep with well nourished, bright white, crimpy wool."

In last year's wool tests their wether lambs averaged 17.6 micron, 1.5 yo ewes 18.7M and 5.5yos 20.8M.
