EVERY year high school and university students take part in AgXtra's annual wheat-growing competition, aiming to produce the highest grain yield, quality and ultimately gross margin.
Teams of students make management decisions about real-life crops including variety selection, seeding rate and fertiliser input.
Agricultural science students from the University of Adelaide must also make decisions around their pre-emergent herbicide program and fungicide program.
On Monday, AgXtra hosted a field day for the five participating high schools of Balaklava High School, Kapunda High School, Rostrevor College, Urrbrae Agricultural High School and Trinity College was held at Roseworthy, where the competition crops are sown.
Researchers and agronomists, as well as AgXtra staff, also gave presentations on topics such as seasonal conditions, weather stations and trial map interpretations.
School teams were then split into three groups and were involved in three sessions run by Peter Boutsalis, Mick Brougham, Sean Mason and Agxtra.
The competition will run throughout the year with final results to be announced in early 2020.
