A 'weighty, beast' of a ram made the $3800 top price at Borung Poll Merino stud's 43rd on-property sale at Waikerie on Wednesday.
The top price ram was sold to Andrew Johnson, Mount Boothby Pastoral Co, Tintinara, through livestock agent Bill Walker, Murray Bridge, for $3800.
The 125-kilogram ram that ranked 107 per cent for greasy fleece weight had a 17.1 micron fleece, measuring 2.8 standard deviation, 16.6 coefficient of variation and 99.8 per cent comfort factor.
Sired by a Wallaloo Park bred sire, stud principal Brenton Kroehn said it was the equal heaviest ram in the line-up.
"Its a weighty, beast of a ram," he said.
"We bought the Wallaloo Park sire in 2016 at their on-property sale and it also sired the second-highest price ram too."
Bill Walker said the top price ram's fleece weight and carcase traits matched the Johnson's breeding goals.
"It has a muzzle like a horse with silky, bold crimpy wool and a long staple length," he said.
"The Johnson's breed sheep that are true, dual-purpose with an exotic fibre."
In November, the ram will be joined to ewes in syndicate with Ridgway and Superior Wool Merinos bloodlines.
Nadda producer Brian Hampel bought the second-highest price ram for $3700.
Also sired by a Wallaloo Park ram, the 112kg-ram ranked 114pc for GFW with a 18.9M fleece that measured 3SD, 15.7CV and 99.4pc CF.
Mr Hampel said he selected big framed, strong bodied sheep that could "carry a lot of wool".
"We operate at the top end of the sale to make sure we have quality rams to join to our 2500 Merino ewes," he said.
Multiple buyers secured drafts of four rams, including interstate buyer Dogwood Farms, Horsham, Vic, to $1900, averaging $1450, KR&ML Thiele, Pompoota, to $1600, averaging $1275 and GC&LK Moore, Jamestown, to $1700, averaging $1075.
The sale was conducted by Elders Loxton and Quality Wool with Elders South East's Laryn Gogel as auctioneer.
