THE latest grains research findings, advice and recommendations for informing growers' tactical decision-making for improved profitability will be on offer at an upcoming forum at Keith.
The GRDC is hosting a Grains Research Update at the Keith Institute on Wednesday, August 21, when industry experts will deliver cutting-edge research insights to local growers and advisers.
GRDC grower relations manager - south Courtney Ramsey said the update presented a valuable opportunity for local growers to hear from leading researchers whose work was generating regionally-relevant outcomes.
"GRDC investments in research and development are constantly producing new knowledge and the GRDC Grains Research Update at Keith will be a one-stop shop for informing growers of the latest agronomic understandings," Ms Ramsey said.
Among the guest speakers will be Colin McMaster from the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries who will discuss the factors that matter most when improving the establishment of canola.
Mr McMaster will relay to growers recent on-farm learnings around precision seeding, sowing depth and density.
Independent agronomist Craig Davis will outline the pros and cons of various harvest weed seed control tactics and how they integrate with different farming systems.
Brian Hughes and Mel Fraser from PIRSA will provide an update on recent findings into treatment of soil acidification, including re-acidification of clayed ground, pH stratification under no-till and tools available to assist decision making on lime type and application.
Amanda Pearce from SARDI, the research division of PIRSA, will present crop rotation learnings from the testing of a range of pulse crops and legume pasture species in the Upper South-East.
The effects on nitrogen balance and yields across a range of different crop sequences will be discussed.
Management tips for early-sown winter wheats and barley varieties will be delivered by SARDI's Kenton Porker.
