A series of kangaroo harvesting workshops are set to hit the Eyre Peninsula next week.
Hosted by Livestock SA together with PIRSA, Macro Meats Australia and the Department for Environment and Water, the workshops will aim to provide landholders with an understanding of the commercial opportunities available through becoming field harvesters or chiller managers.
Workshops will be held on the Western Eyre Peninsula, but Livestock SA president Joe Keynes said there was potential for more workshops to be held across other regions in the future.
"Should these workshops be successful, a larger program will then be rolled out across the commercial harvest zone," he said.
Interested participants will be supported to become licensed kangaroo field processors, which involves the completion of a TAFE SA Certificate in Game Meat Field Processing and Firearms Proficiency Course for Kangaroo Field Processors. The TAFE course will provide instruction on humane animal welfare harvesting practices.
"This training will ensure producers who decide to become involved in the program will maintain industry integrity as trained professional harvesters," Mr Keynes said.
Workshops will be held at the following locations:
- Ceduna RSL Club: July 24, 4pm
- Wirrulla Sports and Recreation Centre: July 25, 10am
- Port Kenny Hotel: July 25, 4pm
