EYRE Peninsula graingrowers will have the opportunity to learn of the latest outcomes from grains research and development at GRDC updates in Minnipa on July 31 and Cleve on August 1.
GRDC southern grower relations manager Courtney Ramsey says the updates, themed 'boosting profitability - resilient solutions', have the potential to deliver positive on-farm impacts.
"The GRDC Grains Research Updates at Minnipa and Cleve will be important forums for extending new insights and advice from GRDC investments in research and development relevant to the region's growers," she said.
Among the guest speakers at both updates will be Kenton Porker from SARDI, who will discuss new generation and adapted wheat and barley varieties for a range of sowing times to minimise the impact of frost and heat stress.
WA consultant Ben White, from the GRDC's Grain Storage Extension team, will explore on-farm storage options for maintaining the quality of grain, while Patrick Redden from Rural Directions will outline requirements for a profit-first approach to precision agriculture.
Speaking at the Minnipa update only will be Therese McBeath from CSIRO, who will analyse cost-effective outcomes for ameliorating sandy soils, along with Chris Preston from the University of Adelaide, who will provide an update on research into problem weeds on Upper EP.
Speaking at the Cleve update only will be SARDI's Penny Roberts, who will look at lentil crop management from sowing to harvest, as well as Chris Davey from YP Ag, who will deliver the latest research findings for integrated weed management strategies to reduce annual ryegrass seed set.
The updates will be held from 9am to 1pm, with catering provided.
Following lunch, Grain Producers SA will host a consultation session with growers, covering the Grain Industry Blueprint and the Country Fire Service harvest and stubble burning codes of practice.
