If you want to run a sustainable commercial beef operation there's one thing you need to be conscious of above all else: genetics.

That's why Maguire Cattle Company owner Gary Maguire has attended the Classic Red Brangus Sale every year for more than half a decade.

The event will take place on September 23 and 24 at the Central Queensland Livestock Exchange (CQLX) in Gracemere and Mr Maguire says there's no chance he'd miss it.

Sixty-seven bulls and 12 heifers will go under the hammer and he hopes to snag the best of them.

Mr Maguire cares deeply about the integrity of his bloodlines and knows all too well what can happen if they're compromised.

That's why he'll only buy from other commercial breeders, who have a strong genetic base and share his commitment for breeding better cattle.

"If you go down the wrong road, with the wrong cross of bulls, you can cause yourself all types of grief," he explained.

"Genetics is a very powerful thing. You can do a lot of stuff and spend a lot of money but if you mess up your bloodlines, the faults that you create can be around for a very long time," he continued.

"Whether it's temperament faults, fertility faults, whatever, it can take a lot of correcting."

Mr Maguire, along with his wife and three children, run a commercial beef operation from their property Honeycombe, 100km north of Dingo on the MacKenzie River.

They have a breeding herd of 500 cows, turning over about 450 calves a year. They also buy in an additional 250 weaner steers for fattening before sending them to the meat works. They're EU and Grass Fed accredited.

Maguire Cattle Company has more than 30 years experience. However, as technology and an understanding of artificial selection has improved over the past few decades they've learnt the importance of working smarter.

"The numbers game used to make you money many years ago but now with quality and good genetics you can make just as much money through better grading and the rest..." Mr Maguire explained.

"Our business is breeding to sell bullocks. So, when we buy, we want to buy from people that are doing the same thing because they've usually got the same goals in mind," he continued.

"They're looking to breed bullocks that grade well, mature early, have a bit of weight about them, that have a good temperament to go along with it."

The Bull Walk and Helmsman Heifer Sale will be held at 3pm on Monday, September 23, 2019. The Bull Sale will take place at 10am on Tuesday, September 24.
