UNIVERSITY students from throughout SA, all studying key science, technology, engineering or maths subject areas, will benefit from scholarships designed to boost the state's skills and research base.
Forty-four Playford Memorial Trust scholarships, worth nearly $500,000, were announced earlier this year.
Playford Trust chair and former premier Dean Brown said the trust had helped build the state's research skills and availability in the past 35 years, since it's inception.
"With the support of numerous partners, over $470,000 in scholarships, internships and awards were made in 2018, with 82 students being supported," he said.
"This year, over 190 applications for scholarships and awards were received, which is far higher than past years.
"Encouraging and fostering skills and research in areas where South Australia has the greatest competency and opportunity will help us meet the growing need for skilled staff for the future."
The Playford Trust is a non-partisan organisation formed to honour the memory of Sir Thomas Playford, the state's longest-serving Premier.
Each year the Trust, together with a range of partners including Codan, Seeley International and OZ Minerals, provides close to $500,000 in scholarships, awards and internships to students in both the University and TAFE sectors.
The scholarships include support for first-year university students from regional South Australia, as well as those studying at Honours and PhD level.
