NT Cattlemen's Association president Chris Nott says the cattle transaction levy should be lifted to help battle challenges such as activists.
At the moment, the cattle transaction levy sits at $5 a head. Mr Nott asked attendees at the recent NTCA conference in Darwin if they would support a 50-cent increase to allow the industry to get on the front foot and employ well-paid professionals to lead the fight to repel the threats facing them.
He later indicated he supported a much higher lift in the levy, a concept that was backed by Cloncurry, Qld-based cattleman Dan Lynch, who said producers needed to think about increasing the levy to $8 to $10 a head.
