PRICES were fully firm to better than the previous sale at Mount Pleasant, according to Landmark Fawcett Mount Pleasant principal Colin Fawcett at yesterday's sheep and cattle sale.
"The quality of the offering today was very good, considering the season," he said.
The second pen of the sheep sale, 30 Dorset-cross lambs from Semmler Brothers, Lyndoch, sold at $166, while the fourth pen, 11 White Suffolk-Merino lambs from AH Smith, Brinkley, made $160.
Inglebrae Holdings, Callington, also sold two lambs at $150, while CA Paech, Tepko, also sold a lambs at $150.
All up, 681 lambs were sold averaging $107, while 61 hoggets averaged $66.16, 13 wethers averaged $78.85, 136 ewes averaged $79.21 and 43 rams $66.88.
Michael and Kylie Noack, Springton, sold the top price ewes at $120 for 28 quality scanned empty Merinos.
Wethers sold to $110 for four from K Freegard, Kersbrook, while rams sold to $94 for two from Peterson & Eustice, Hahndorf, which sold a further six at $85.
WD Martin, Harrogate, sold three hoggets for the sale top of $114, while CR Tapscott, Tanunda, sold 10 at $90.
Also making $90 for hoggets were K&R Prokopec, Springton, with two head and AMP Farms Trust, Tungkillo, also with two head.
In the cattle sale, yearling steers sold to $1220 for a Limousin from Hearden Farm, Keyneton, which sold another Limousin-Angus steer at $1120.
Hearden Farm also sold a Limousin heifer at $880.
Heifers sold to $900 for three Angus from Brown Farming Enterprises, Keyneton, while cows sold to $1420 for some heavy Blonde d'Aquitaine-Murray Grey cows from WR&BA Henderson, Mount Pleasant.
WA&MD Seeliger, Eden Valley, sold a Murray Grey cow at $1380, while Clover Banks Pastoral, Mount Torrens, sold two Murray Grey cows also at $1380.
Some of the surprising lots during the cattle sale came from vendor Ken Sieben, who was selling Blonde d'Aquitaines from his local Argyle Park stud.
Mr Sieben said the nine head were surplus to his requirements, particularly as the feed supply tightened on-farm and was expensive to buy.
He sold two senior bulls, aged about five years old, at $1780 to Midfields and $1600 to Princess Royal, while two smaller bulls made $1500 to Midfields and $1160 to Princess Royal.
He also offered a very large, older Murray Grey-Blonde d'Aquitaine steer, which drew gasps from the crowd, for $1520 to Laidley.
A heifer and a cow from Argyle Park both made $1340, while another heifer sold at $790 and another cow made $800.
Overall, 31 heifers averaged $695.81, 53 steers averaged $735.66, 33 cows averaged $1073.64 and six bulls averaged $1310.
One lone Friesian-cross cow with a very fresh calf at-foot from Musolino, Inglewood, sold at $600 to Kangarilla.
Buying support came mainly from Thomas Foods International, Kangarilla, Princess Royal, MIdfields, Laidley, Meat Barn, Joe Trimboli, Mount Pleasant Butcher and Two Brothers.
