EXPECTATIONS were that last Friday’s Mount Gambier store sale was going to be tough going, but prices were kept buoyant with good competition from local graziers, restockers and feedlotters.
A range of good quality cattle were presented for sale, attracting strong competition, a distinct gap showing between the well-bred cattle and the lighter, plainer and off-bred types reflected in prices paid.
Heavy Angus steers 400 kilograms-plus sold from $2.42/kg to $3.10/kg, while coloured steers in this weight range sold from $2.68-$2.89/kg.
Mid-weight Angus steers 350-400kg made from $2.63-$3.12/kg, while coloured steers sold from $2.81-$3.18/kg.
Angus steers from 300-350kg sold from $2.33-$3.19/kg, while coloured steers of the same weights sold from $2.37-$2.92/kg.
Angus steers under 300kg sold from $2.38-$3.18/kg, while coloured steers in this weight range sold from $2.19-$2.83/kg.
Nampara Pastoral Co, Lucindale, set the pace early, buying the first pen of 16 Angus steers, 492kg, at $1400 or $2.85/kg, sold by RW&.B Passauer, Yahl,
They then bought the following two pens from Noola South, Hamilton, Vic – 12 Pathfinder-blood Angus steers, av 535kg at 16-18 months, for $1410 or $2.65 and 18 av 474kg at $1350 or $2.85/kg.
Nampara Pastoral also bought six of Noola South’s Angus-Murray Grey steers, av 485kg at 16-18 months, for $1370 or $2.82/kg.
TB Megaw, Kongorong, sold 21 Boonaroo and Rennylea-bld Angus steers, av 416kg at 10-11 months, for $1250 or $3/kg to Landmark Keatley Mount Gambier, who also bought the Megaw’s second draft of 25 av 382kg at $1150 or $3.01/kg.
Landmark Gawler pushed competition on cattle 340-400kg and set the floor price in Friday’s market buying 39 steers and 22 heifers for J&A Curnow, Mallala, as well as 161 steers and 90 heifers for Korunye Park Feedlot, Korunye, with target weights from 340-400kg.
The 2000 head feedlot usually source their feeder cattle from the north, but being in very short supply, headed south to Mount Gambier to buy.

RF&MP Rogers, Kalangadoo, sold 14 Angus steers, av 391kg at 10-11 months, for $1170 or $2.99/kg to Landmark Mount Gambier; a second draft av 355kg at $1070 or $3.01/kg to Miller Whan & John and a draft of 14 Angus-cross steers av 362kg at $1100 or $3.04/kg to Thomas DeGaris & Clarkson Penola, account Merrett.
Kuaraak Partnership, Strathdownie, Vic, sold 18 Pasturefed Certified Assurance Scheme-eligible Angus steers av 407kg at $1140 or $2.80/kg to Green Triangle Livestock, which also bought 20 Angus steers, av 322kg at 10-12 months, for $940 or $2.92/kg from SC&KI Higgs, Nene Valley.
JG&CK Clarke, Kingston SE, sold 68 Granite Ridge blood Angus steers, weighing from 443kg to 371kg for an av of $1034.
The top draft av 443kg sold at $1310 or $2.96/kg to Ravenswood Feedlot, Hay, NSW, while MWJ bought the second and third drafts at $1250 or $3.10kg and $1150 or $3.10/kg respectively.
D Trethewey, Kangaroo Island, sold 18 Angus steers av 380kg at $1060 or $2.79/kg to Landmark Gawler, while a second draft of 17 Angus and Angus-cross steers, av 309kg, made $985 or $3.19/kg sold to Creek Livestock, Mount Gambier.
BT&E Ling, Mount Benson, sold 13 European Union-accredited Stoney Point-bld Angus steers, av 326kg at 10-11 months, for $940 or $2.88/kg to Pinkerton Palm Hamlyn & Steen; Garden Flat, Allendale East, sold six Boonaroo-bld Angus steers av 423kg at $1140 or $2.70/kg to JBS Swift Australia; and CJ&AL Sealey, Kongorong, sold 16 Boonaroo-bld Angus steers av 392kg at $1190 or $3.04/kg to MWJ.
Glencairn, Casterton, Vic, sold 44 Boonaroo-bld Angus-cross steers, 10 months, with weights from 270-327kg for an av of $893.
Their top draft av 327kg sold at $940 or $2.87/kg to MWJ.

KG Feast & Son, Greenpoint, sold 19 Warrensville-bld Hereford steers av 361kg at $1150 or $3.18/kg to TDC.
Wandovale, Casterton, Vic, sold 12 Murray Grey steers, av 473kg at 15-16 months, for $1370 or $2.89/kg to Ravensworth Feedlot, which also bought seven Lindsay-bld Murray Grey steers av 422kg at $1200 or $2.84/kg from Bambra, Casterton, Vic, and five Angus-cross steers av 418kg at $1200 or $2.87/kg from Roseneath, Millicent.

Calgara Station sold 100 EU-accredited Hereford steers, May/June-drops weighing 224-277kg, for an av of $700.
The top draft weighing 277kg sold at $785 or $2.83/kg to Elders on behalf of Brian Smith, who also bought Calgara’s second draft av 247kg at $610 or $2.47/kg.
HEIFERS sold to $1020 at the Mount Gambier store sale on Friday, for European Union-accredited Banquet and Coolana-blood Angus from Leaella Partnership, Wallacedale, Vic.
The pen of 10 averaged 407 kilograms and sold at $1020 or $2.50/kg to Creek Livestock.
Overall heifers 400kg-plus sold from $2.08-$2.57kg; heifers 350-400kg sold from $2.02$2.57/kg; heifers 300-350kg sold from $2.04-$2.46/kg, while lighter heifers under 300kg sold from $1.54-$2.53kg.
RF&MP Rogers, Kalangadoo, sold 61 Angus and Angus-cross heifers, weighing 309-368kg at 10-11 months, for an av of $879.
The Rogers’ top draft av 368kg sold at $970 or $2.63/kg to Garrison Feedlot, which also bought the second draft av 350kg at $890 or $2.54/kg.
Shiloh Park, Mount Gambier, sold 20 Angus-cross heifers, av 340kg at 10-12 months, for $830 or $2.44/kg to MWJ Lindsay, who also bought seven Hereford-Simmental heifers, av 319kg at 9-10 months, for $2.25/kg fo Klaassens Contracting, Yahl.
MWJ Mount Gambier bought 16 Angus heifers av 288kg at $730 or $2.53/kg for DL Trethewey, Kangaroo Island, and a draft of eight Hereford heifers av 286kg at $680 or $2.37/kg on behalf of KG Feast & Son, Greenpoint.
