The first son of a renowned American-bred sire has helped Mandayen stud to an $11,000 top at its 14th annual on-property sale at Keith.
The stud offered 50 Limousin bulls and sold 47, but it was Mandayen Compliant, a black August 2017-drop bull, that caught first-time buyers Lake Hawdon Props, Robe, attention.
Weighing 744 kilograms, it was the first son of Wulfs Compliant, a bull that made $74,000 in America three years ago, to be offered in Australia.
Stud manager Damian Gommers said the stud secured the only semen rights in Australia.
"Mandayen Compliant is a young sire with real potential in either a purebred or topline commercial operation and we will have more of Wulfs Compliant sons next year," he said.
"The first progeny looked great and we are very excited about what Wulfs Compliant will do for us in the future.
Its Limousin Breedplan figures included +48 for docility, +2.8 eye muscle area with a +23 200-day weight, +40 for 400 and +58 for 600-day.
It also had a 36-centimetre scrotal circumference and it ranked in the highest 20 per cent for all growth traits, carcase weight and eye muscle area.
Lake Hawdon's advisor Grant Jackson said "it was an athletic, smooth skinned and well-muscled young bull.
"It will be used over Angus/Shorthorn-cross heifers because we are trying something a bit different than what we have done in the past," he said.
"All of the progeny will be sold.
"The two young bulls we bought will be used over last year's heifers in mid May and the older bull will be used over the cows."
Lake Hawdon secured a draft of three bulls, averaging $7666.
Apricot bull Mandayen Aftershock made second-highest price of $10,000 and it was sold to Brentvale Limousins, Echunga.
Sired by GHR Polled Aftershock, it weighed 854kg and had a 40cm scrotal circumference.
Its Breed-plan figures also included +1.7EMA, +34 docility and +51 for 400-day growth and +68 for 600.
Mr Gommers said because of the drought conditions he was very pleased with the sale result.
"The season has definitely impacted a few of our clients who would usually be looking for bulls from us," he said.
"Although the top price was down a bit, it was still a great result."
Connor Pastoral, Tintinara, secured five bulls to $7500, averaging $5900, and Rockallen Pastoral, Keith, also bought five to $7000, averaging $5600.
GS and MY Sutherland, Coragulac, Vic, bought three bulls to $7500, averaging $7166.
The auctioneering was shared by Spence Dix & Co's Jono Spence, Elders stud stock's Ross Milne and Landmark stud stock's Richard Miller.
