A bull bought in-utero from the Coolana female dispersal sale in 2017 has topped Stoney Point Performance Angus stud’s annual autumn sale on Monday at its Naracoorte sale complex.
Stoney Point Ninja N142, an AI-bred bull by Booroomooka Bartel K274,was knocked down at $12,500.
Ninja N142 caught the eye of Old Fairview manager Marc Dupree, Lucindale, and his Pinkerton Palm Hamlyn & Steen agent Scott Bittner for its outstanding birth to growth spread of Breedplan figures from a birthweight figure of +3.5 to +132 600 day weight.
“It is a mid-ranging bull that will be good for our heifers and then go out with some cows after that,” Mr Dupree said.
The 19-month-old weighed 832 kilograms and was in the top 15 per cent of the breed on all Angus $indexes.
Old Fairview have bought from Stoney Point twice previously and have been impressed by the weight for age in the calves. They are always among the heaviest weaners at the Naracoorte sales in January.
Stoney Point had plenty to celebrate in its 21st year with a loyal following of more than 40 registered bidders from western Vic to the Adelaide Hills in the crowd.
In the breakdown 60 of 63 bulls, aged 18 to 20 months, averaged a credible $6071.
Buyers were spoilt for genetic diversity including the first offerings of Murdeduke Kicking, EF Complement 8088, VAR Reserve 1111 and Deer Valley Patriot 3222.
The second highest price of $9000 was reached twice.
Mark Egel, Roma Downs Pastoral Co, Keith, was the first buying Lot 3, Stoney Point Neptune N103.
Neptune was a 808kg son of US sire VAR Reserve 1111.
Roma Downs also bought the following lot which was selected as the butchers pick by Perry’s son Richard Gunner. They received five kilograms of porterhouse steak as a prize.
David Hage, Morundah Trust, Bool Lagoon, put in the $9000 winning bid for Lot 15, Stoney Point Nebo N204, a TeMania Emperor E343 son.
Ian and Louise Johnson, Amherst Trust, Willalooka, were the sale’s volume buyers with six bulls to $8000,averaging $5917.
GA Young & Sons, Kalangadoo, put together four bulls averaging $4500 and Landmark Adelaide’s Trevor Driver secured four bulls at $4000 each for Broad Cattle Company.
Stud director Perry Gunner said he was very pleased with the feedback on the cattle by their clients and the sale result.
“Everyone knows it is difficult at the moment with the season and a few more studs so we were very happy with the result,” he said.
Stud manager Peter Colliver says he was pleased with the line-up of bulls, especially being the first group from his own mating selections.
“The more calving ease, high growth sires like the Kickings and Complements sold extremely well,” he said.
‘We had a few volume orders which always helps.”
Landmark and Spence Dix & Co were joint selling agents with Gordon Wood and Jono Spence the auctioneers.
Stoney Point will hold another sale on May 8 at Naracoorte. About 30 bulls will be catalogued for the Ready to Work sale with about two thirds suitable to join with heifers.
