SA Angus Week will feature the breed’s largest offering ever with nearly 900 bulls catalogued for sale in 14 sales.
From February 6 to 15, buyers will be spoilt for choice, but it is expected to test the market.
One of the two debutantes is Ravenswood stud, which has made a rapid rise since being established in 2015 by Richard and Anna Crowley, Balhannah.
In late 2017, the Crowleys entered a joint venture with noted Angus breeder John Gommers and his wife Rebeka at Murray Bridge.
The herd has grown to 280 breeders and they expect to increase numbers further after buying land near Warrnambool, Vic.
Last year Ravenswood sold 75 bulls to $15,000 and Mr Gommers is excited about their first Angus Week sale on Friday, February 8, at The Basin Complex, Willalooka.
“Because I had an existing presence in the industry I was pretty keen to get back to auctioning and a lot of guys who have bought bulls from us in the past prefer the auction and letting the market decide the value,” he said.
Mr Gommers says the 38 autumn and spring 2017-drop bulls on offer will line-up well and include an impressive group of sons by United States AI sire JMB Traction, displaying explosive early growth and natural thickness.
“The bulls have spent the majority of their time at Murray Bridge, which has seen the toughest season ever, but we are pleased how they have come through on slightly less feed,” he said.
‘We made a conscious decision two or three months ago that it was better to present them naturally.”
Mr Gommers is optimistic about the industry and says if Australia can get “some semblance” of a normal season there is plenty of upside in the market.
